ER Athletics has another stellar winter season
Greyhound athletics continued their tradition of performing well during the winter season. ERHS had 132 student-athletes over the winter months which included 48 girls and 84 boys while ERMS had 92 student-athletes (33 girls & 59 boys). Here’s a quick wrap-up of how each season went:
ER Middle School had the following participation numbers during the winter season: 19 eighth grade boys, 21 seventh grade boys, 13 eighth grade girls, 10 seventh grade girls, 15 swimmers (10 girls/5 boys) and 14 wrestlers.
The boys bowling team consisted of 9 bowlers and ended the season with a 4-9 record. The four wins included victories over Lansing, Mason and twice against Fowlerville. The girls bowling team struggled all year with only 4 eligible bowlers. Even though they finished 0-10, the ladies completed the season and are looking to recruit some more participants for next season.
Competitive cheer saved their best for last as they finished in 8th place out of 13 division 3 teams at the Frankenmuth district. Their score of 646.9 was the highest all season. The 14 ladies worked hard all season and acquired many new skills that are going to help them next season and beyond.
ERHS had 2 boys compete on the Mid-Michigan Marauders hockey co-op with Holt, Portland, Grand Ledge and Potterville. Greyhounds Jake Koehn & AJ Stallone helped their team reach the regional championship game.
Girls basketball was blessed to have three teams this winter at ERHS. The freshmen team consisted of 9 players and finished with a 7-6 record. The Jv team was made up of 10 girls and finished with an outstanding 14-5 overall record. The varsity squad included 1 sophomore, 4 juniors and 6 seniors. The lady ‘hounds finished the regular season with a 14-6 overall record and 7-3 (2nd place) in the CAAC White Division. ER began the district tournament with an awesome overtime win over highly ranked host Chelsea and followed that up with a win in the semifinals over Onsted. The Greyhounds couldn’t our run Parma-Western (21-2) in the district championship game though.
Greyhound wrestling continued their traditional of excellence over the 2019-2020 season. The 24 men finished as undefeated CAAC White Division team champions (7th year in a row) and Team District Champions (10th year in a row). Caleb Fish became the 5th 2-time State Champion for the Greyhounds after winning the title at 160 pounds! Other All-State finishers included Chris Haynes as a State Runner-Up, Chad Haynes 3rd, JJ Shaull 4th, Robert Davids 6th, Dylan Norris 7th and Jaiden West 7th. Zam Thompson was also a State Qualifier. All 7 seniors contributed greatly during their years at ERHS and will be greatly missed!
With a 6-3 overall record and 4-2 in the CAAC Red Division (3rd place), the ER swimming & diving team (15 boys) had a very productive and successful regular season. The 7 State Meet qualifiers are as follows: Jack Tanner (Diving), Kaiden Daugherty (Diving) Aiden Ehrhardt (100 Fly) and the 200 Free relay team of Aiden Ehrhardt, Keith Morgan, Tommy O’Brien and Avery Jones (alternates: Caleb Johnson & Trevor LaNore). These boys and their coaches were literally on their way to Oakland University for the State Meet when the news came that the event would be postponed and subsequently canceled…
Speaking of being postponed, let’s finish up with the boys basketball team(s)… The freshmen team (8 players) finished 6-12 overall. The Jv team of 14 sophomores finished 12-7 overall and 6-4 in league play which included winning 3 of their last 4 games. The ER varsity boys team consists of 4 seniors and 10 juniors and they currently sit with a 18-3 overall record after finishing 7-3 (3rd place) in the CAAC White Division. The Greyhounds handled Portland 56-34 for the 3rd time in the district semifinal game at Olivet on 3/11/2020 and were set to play in the district championship game against Lakewood before their season was abruptly ended by the current COVID-19 pandemic.
